The National Institute for Health and Social Care Excellence use evidence to produces standards and guidance for the NHS and social care to improve outcomes for people.
The NHS Constitution for England (Department of Health 2009, revised 2012) provides patients with the right that medicines that have been considered by NICE through the technology appraisal process and given a positive assessment should be made available to patients, where clinically appropriate, and therefore be included within the formulary adopted by the local healthcare providers and commissioners. The following demonstrates the CCG’s adherence to NICE TA recommendations about medicines. Prospectively from the April 1st 2013 all medicines with a positive NICE Technology Appraisal will be automatically added to the local formulary. Where NICE states “option for treatment”, the medicine will be added to the local formulary and if necessary its place in the relevant local care pathway(s) be defined.
